Deeppopotamus is an electronic duo of Moscow composers and experimental artists Feliks Mirenskiy and Alexei Sysoev.
"My Viy" — documentation of a performance at one of the Moscow venues in June 2021.
The basis was the dissected voice of Frank Sinatra from the song "My Way". Thus, the whole composition can be considered a free remix of the voice timbre and selected intonations of the piece.
Today, every musician has the opportunity to create a virtually limitless library of sounds using sampling, various forms of wave synthesis, filters, and so on.
This gives rise to a new problem - how to organize this set of information? What mechanisms of reduction and methods of working with the material should be considered?
How do they work? The duet was born for the search for conscious solutions to these problems. Starting from day one, it was decided to focus on searching for effective ways to reduce the material, as well as other options for artist limitation.
Deeppopotamus: "Our music is made up of very heterogeneous elements. For example, along with caring for the timbre component of music, we returned to the idea of a complex rhythm. Probably, such a close look at rhythm also had an ordering effect on us. Conscious overlays of heterogeneous and, in the very broad sense, different materials on top of each other are also our method. We often quote, and the material for quoting can be the most unexpected: Frank Sinatra, Fyodor Chaliapin, Gérard Grisey, Morton Feldman, Gagaku, traditional music of Vietnam, Franz Schubert and Miles Davis and etc. All this galore serves the same purpose — clearing the musical matter and searching for harmony, in the multiplication of heterogeneous elements, in what was called in Ars Nova times the phrase Discordia Concors (harmony out of contradictions, agreement out of disagreements). Stripped but complex structures, their superimposition on each other, and the effect that is born from it — this is how our music should sound — dry and juicy, harmonious and complex!"
